Dida's grip on Bondita's hand was a lifeline. They walked away from the gossiping crowd, the hushed whispers a constant, humiliating buzz in their ears. Dida led her to a quiet corner, away from the main celebration.
Once they were alone, Dida turned to her, her face a mask of worry. "Yeh kya tha, bahu? Yeh kaisi baatein kar rahi hain log? Tumne... tumne unse kuch kaha?" (What was this, daughter-in-law? What kind of things are people saying? Did you... did you say something to them?) she asked, her voice low and filled with concern.
